Track Review: Charli XCX-Von Dutch

Heard this song the other day. Charli XCX is one of pop’s most commendable stars in my eyes because she basically does whatever she wants. It’s hard to argue that she is an innovator in the pop landscape and not just as a songwriter. She’s got some of the best production in the game.

Of all the under the radar genres that I think could blow up in the late 2020s, hyperpop is the one I really think could become iconic. It’s quirky and over the top aesthetic have the potential to shine in the Age of Image we live in today.

“Von Dutch” is the opening single from Charli XCX’s album Brat, which comes out on June 7th. That is a record we will be discussing when it comes out for sure. And this single has me hyped. I just love the vibes here. It’s clubby, a little dark and very in your face. Charli XCX has always been confident and here she shows it. She’s our number one, she’s the center of attention, and she is that girl. You love to hear it.

The production here is awesome. The hook is hypnotic and built for some grimy, hedonistic club fest. This track is banger. I could listen to it any and everywhere. Charli’s smug and slightly sadistic lyrics give the track a robotic and menacing feel that balances perfectly with it’s dopamine fueled instrumental. It’s the sound of a light-hearted nihilist menacing society late at night, under epilepsy lights behind swanky club doors in a VIP we would never see.

If you’re ever wanted to get into Charli XCX, or explore a different side of pop, this song is great place to start.
